NVREC Advocating in Des Moines
Fall Legislative Meetings
Each November, NVREC hosts a Legislative meeting to visit with Senators and Representatives in an open forum. This is a good opportunity for the Cooperative to remind Legislators the importance of being able to deliver safe, affordable, reliable and environmentally responsible electricity to our member-owners.
Welcome Back Reception
Every January, the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives hosts a welcome back reception for state legislators. Nishnabotna Valley REC takes this opportunity to meet with Representatives and Senators to discuss the upcoming session and talk to them about issues that could affect your electric rates.
REC Day on the Hill
In March, more than 300 REC employees and directors from across Iowa gather in the halls of the State Capitol building to meet with legislators. The annual advocacy day at the Capitol is a valuable opportunity to meet face-to-face with our elected officials and share a local perspective on issues that impact rural Iowa and rural economic development.
Regular Visits to the Capitol
Annually during the legislative session, NVREC takes a small group to the Capitol to educate legislators on the benefits of the cooperative business model, including ownership, cost-based rates and democratic governance. It is important that legislators understand that electric service deregulation would negatively impact rural Iowa businesses and communities.
