Hundreds of members enjoy the benefits of electric heat, air conditioning and water heating and save money on the costs by participating in Nishnabotna Valley REC's Switch Makes Cents program. They receive special rates or credits for the electricity used by equipment connected to the system.

Load management? Why? An electric generation and transmission system works best when the load remains constant 24 hours a day. However, the demand for electricity varies from hour to hour, creating peaks and valleys in the load pattern. Installing load management switches on equipment such as water heaters, air conditioners and heat systems can help level the load pattern. During peak load conditions, a radio signal is sent to the switch from NIPCO, our power supplier, to interrupt power. When the signals cease, the controlled equipment returns to normal operation.

What about comfort? Control strategies developed by NIPCO and your cooperative, cycle equipment on and off at specified times to maintain adequate comfort levels for you. With Switch Makes Cents, it is best to set your thermostat at a comfortable level and leave it at that setting. Proper sizing and maintenance of your equipment are important as well.

On most switches, red lights are test lights and a green light (flashing or steady) means the switch is controlling.
