As the economy begins to improve, homeowners are spending more money on upgrades – especially in kitchens and bathrooms – according to Kermit Baker, AIA Chief Economist.
Architects report that the size of kitchens is increasing, as are the number of activities focused in the kitchen.
Popular items in a kitchen remodel or design for a new kitchen include:
- Installing computer stations or charging stations for electronics
- Integrating the kitchen with a family room
- Adding a recycling center
- Expanding pantry areas
- Adding a wine storage area
- Improving adaptability/universal design
Sustainable materials are popular, too. The most popular trends fitting this category include:
- Renewable flooring and countertop materials
- Drinking water filtration systems
In bathrooms, key components consumers are more interested in include:
- LED lighting has the greatest increase in interest over last year
- Water conservation has increased over last year, with water-saving and dual-flush toilets popular
- Accessible features, such as doorless/no-threshhold/roll-in showers and hand showers support the concept of universal design for an aging population
Bathroom features that remain strong from last year include:
- 54 percent of reporting architects indicate that adaptability and universal design are important to consumers
- Radiant floors
- Increased amount of linen closet storage
