Home Building & Remodeling

As the economy begins to improve, homeowners are spending more money on upgrades – especially in kitchens and bathrooms – according to Kermit Baker, AIA Chief Economist.

Architects report that the size of kitchens is increasing, as are the number of activities focused in the kitchen.

Popular items in a kitchen remodel or design for a new kitchen include:

  • Installing computer stations or charging stations for electronics
  • Integrating the kitchen with a family room
  • Adding a recycling center
  • Expanding pantry areas
  • Adding a wine storage area
  • Improving adaptability/universal design

Sustainable materials are popular, too. The most popular trends fitting this category include:

  • Renewable flooring and countertop materials
  • Drinking water filtration systems

In bathrooms, key components consumers are more interested in include:

  • LED lighting has the greatest increase in interest over last year
  • Water conservation has increased over last year, with water-saving and dual-flush toilets popular
  • Accessible features, such as doorless/no-threshhold/roll-in showers and hand showers support the concept of universal design for an aging population

Bathroom features that remain strong from last year include:

  • 54 percent of reporting architects indicate that adaptability and universal design are important to consumers
  • Radiant floors
  • Increased amount of linen closet storage
